The health of your gingival (gum) tissue gives us insight into the health of the rest of your body. People actually lose more teeth to periodontal disease (gum disease) than cavities. Our goal is for your teeth and dental restorations to last as long as possible. We evaluate the health of your mouth with a comprehensive exam. This includes periodontal probing, palpation of your masticatory muscles and oral cancer screening. From this information, we will develop a tailor-fit plan for you.
Some patients require more than a normal tooth cleaning. This process is called scaling and root planing. Root surfaces are cleaned and smoothed with precision.
It is important to remove plaque and tartar from the gum pockets, as they allow bacteria to set in. The toxins from bacteria irritate the gums, and can lead to severe gum disease. Scaling and root planing can be instrumented in preventing bone loss and help you keep your teeth.
Why do I need an oral cancer screening?
Screening for early changes in the oral tissue can help detect cancer at a stage when it can be more successfully treated. Smoking and use of tobacco products is the primary risk factor for oral cancer, accounting for more than 75% of oral cancer cases.
